Biography

Matiu is the stage name of Matthew Vachon, born in 1986 in Uashat-Maliotenam, Quebec. He is an Innu singer-songwriter primarily active in the folk and rock genres. Matiu is noted for his contributions to traditional and roots music, and he has been nominated three times for the Félix Award for Indigenous Artist of the Year, in 2019, 2020, and 2021. In 2016, he competed in Le Rythme, a music competition aired on APTN for First Nations musicians. He released a self-titled EP in 2017, followed by his full-length debut album Petikat in 2018, and the album Tipatshimushtunan in 2022. Matiu is also a member of the Nikamu Mamuitun collective led by Florent Vollant.
