Biography

John Jacob Weinzweig (March 11, 1913 – August 24, 2006) was a composer, teacher, and advocate of contemporary Canadian concert music. Born in Toronto, Weinzweig studied music at the University of Toronto and left for the United States in 1937 to study under Bernard Rogers. During World War II, he began composing film music and became a professor at the University of Toronto in 1952. He co-founded the Canadian League of Composers and was involved in various organizations representing musicians and composers. In 1948, he won a silver medal in the Olympic art competitions for his Divertimento no 1 for solo flute and strings.
