Biography

The Canadian Opera Company (COC) is an opera company in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is the largest opera company in Canada and one of the largest opera producers in North America. Founded in 1950 by Nicholas Goldschmidt and Herman Geiger-Torel as the Royal Conservatory Opera Company, it was led by Lotfi Mansouri for 12 years, during which the "supertitles" (English translations of the librettos projected during performances) were introduced. This technique quickly spread to other operas worldwide. The current director is Alexander Neef. The COC performed at the Hummingbird Centre in Toronto until 2006, when it moved to the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.
